Recognition in nationwide Bread Heroes awards scheme Our Artisan Bakery Manager has earned recognition in a nationwide awards scheme which celebrates the very best of the industry. Dylan Needham was named in the Special Mentions Roll of Honour in the 2020 Tiptree World Bread Awards Heroes with Brook Food for his efforts over the past year. The awards scheme celebrates the UK’s bakers, millers and farmers, with efforts during the coronavirus pandemic a particular focus for the judges in this year’s award. Winners and ‘special mentions’ were picked out across 12 UK regions. The winners and those in the special mentions roll of honour were revealed in an online ceremony last month. Dylan, who has received a certificate in recognition of this honour, has been part of our journey since 2018, managing the bakery, developing our signature bakes, and also working with young people with severe autism to develop their skills to become bakers. During the pandemic, baked sweet treats from Bread & Beyond have regularly been distributed to Prior’s Court staff members while the bakery continues to operate to provide vital vocational work opportunities for young people severely affected by autism, as well as supplying baked goods to organisations across West Berkshire. Dylan said: “It was a real surprise to receive the certificate, but a very happy surprise. So thank you to my nominator and to the Bread Heroes awards organisers. “I truly enjoy my role as I have always had a passion for baking, but I am now able to share that passion with the young people we work with every day. That is the joy of the job – getting the young people involved and creating with them a real sense of achievement. “We are still in the early stages of the Bread & Beyond journey, but we are already seeing so many young people benefit from the bakery and I am hugely excited to see what the future holds.” While the bakery shop is not open to the general public, Bread & Beyond products are available at a number of outlets across the West Berkshire area, including Stockcross Village Stores; and Casey Fields Farm Shop, in Ashampstead. We also supply all the bread and baked goods on the Prior’s Court site, catering for around 90 young people and 500 staff members.
